Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane - all these moisturizing ingredients have long been known to us and are actively used in the production of a wide range of skincare products. However, there's one component that not many people are aware of, yet it has one of the best moisturizing effects. This ingredient is called sodium PCA.
Quick Reference

Ingredient Type: Humectant
Main Benefits: It moisturizes by attracting and retaining water in the skin and also helps to restore the protective skin barrier. It has anti-inflammatory properties.
Who is it for: Almost everyone. Sodium PCA is very well tolerated and is suitable for even weakened and/or sensitive skin.
How often to use: Daily (once or twice a day).
Pairs well with: Most ingredients, especially moisturizing ones like hyaluronic acid.
Do not use with: Nitrosamines such as DEA or TEA. They reduce each other's effectiveness and can even be harmful to the skin when combined.
What is Sodium PCA?
Sodium PCA is the sodium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, also known as pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, pyroglutamic acid, or proline. This amino acid is a natural component of our skin and constitutes approximately 12% of the chemical formula for the natural moisturizing factor, or NMF. NMF is a mixture of various components that help keep the skin’s surface supple and protected.
Benefits of Sodium PCA for Skin
The most important benefit of this ingredient is its moisturizing properties, but it has other advantages:
- Moisturizes the skin: Sodium PCA retains water in the skin cells, functioning similarly to hyaluronic acid and glycerin. This ingredient increases the moisture content in the upper layers of the skin by absorbing it from the air. Compared to glycerin, sodium PCA hydrates at least twice as effectively, though hyaluronic acid still holds the top spot. Sodium PCA can hold water molecules weighing 250 times more than itself, while hyaluronic acid can hold about 1000 times. Despite being less known and more expensive for that reason, sodium PCA has advantages that hyaluronic acid does not.
- Reduces the appearance of wrinkles: By increasing moisture in the epidermis, sodium PCA helps the skin to look nourished and youthful.
- Improves hair texture: Sodium PCA improves the texture of damaged hair by retaining water molecules.
- Restores the skin barrier: It helps to moisturize the skin and strengthens the protective barrier, which is beneficial for conditions like eczema caused by a damaged skin barrier.
- Anti-inflammatory properties: Sodium PCA does not cause irritation and helps to reduce inflammation, making it suitable for treating eczema.
- Suitable for all skin types.
Side Effects
Sodium PCA has no known side effects, even in highly concentrated amounts (40-50%). However, individuals with allergies to coconut oil or soybeans should use it cautiously. Ideally, perform a patch test before use.
How to Use?
When buying cosmetics with sodium PCA, it might not always be labeled as such. Look for the following names:
- Sodium pidolate
- 5-oxo-DL-proline
- Sodium pyroglutamate
- Monosodium salt
- Proline
Sodium PCA is very effective, so you don't need to buy a highly concentrated product to see results. A few percent in the formula will suffice. For the best effect, combine sodium PCA with other moisturizers. Apply the product to slightly damp skin to help to retain the maximum number of water molecules.
