Coenzyme Q-10 is a naturally occurring quinone that is found in most aerobic organisms from bacteria to mammals. It was first identified in 1940, and isolated from the mitochondria of the beef heart, in 1957. Coenzyme Q10 is the spark plug of the human body: Just as a car can't run without that initial spark, the human body can't get going without CoQ10. Coenzyme Q10 improves the use of oxygen at the cellular level, especially in the cells of the heart muscle and brain. It is an essential component of the mitochondria, which produce the power that cells need to divide, move, contract, and perform all their other functions. CoQ10 also plays a critical role in the manufacture of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy that drives all body processes. What’s more, CoQ10 is a very important antioxidant that protects the cells against damage. Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that effectively neutralizes free radicals, which cause oxidative damage to cells. Coenzyme Q10 is very safe—no serious adverse effects have ever been reported, even with long-term use.
